“Digger” is a truly masterful film that may not belong in this era. It’s a film that requires patience and provokes thought. Yes, it’s challenging but that isn’t a cinematic sin. Tom Cruise delivers arguably his best overall performance since “Born on the 4th of July.” The commitment and execution is flawless. It’s a transformative performance that helps uplift the entire supporting cast. Everyone came to play ball but no one wanted to be completely out done by Cruise. The result is a terrific ensemble cast, particularly Riz Ahmed and John Goodman, that deserves serious attention when it comes to the casting Oscar. Alejandro G. Inarritu takes big swings with most working. His pacing is deliberate which may cause concern for some viewers but I’ve never imagined Inarritu waking up and eating a Pop Tart. This is real cinema. Excellent cinema. Game changing cinema. It’s a lot of fun watching something special unfold. But I’m a cinephile. “Digger” may be conceptually too sophisticated and a tad too dark for some — which is a tragic concern. But if you are looking for something different and bold “Digger” is your ticket.

A.G. Iñárritu's Digger is a brave and gorgeous art film that will not score with mainstream audiences but will play best for the Academy, especially crafts and actors. But critics will divide on Cruise. The tour-de-force amphitheater scene might put him across. Riz Ahmed is fab.
