Eritrean Festival Sweden 2026 and the Road to Dallas

The Grand Eritrean Festival in Asmara, Eritrea, officially opened by President Isaias Afwerki, marked the beginning of this year’s global season of Eritrean festivals. From the homeland, the celebrations continue to Stockholm, then next week to the North American Eritrean Festival in Dallas, Texas, before moving onward to Toronto, Australia, and cities across Europe. Though separated by oceans, these gatherings form one continuous national celebration a living expression of a people bound together by history, culture, and a shared identity.

Dr. Ruth Ghirmay, works as a physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Orotta National Referral Hospital. Born in 1991 in the historic hills of Ararib in the Sahel region, she came into the world three months after Eritrea gained its independence. Due to her mother's profession as a teacher, her family moved frequently. Dr. Ruth Ghirmay attended school in Keren until the third grade before continuing her education in Asmara. Education has always been the most valued legacy in her family; she was a prize-winning student and actively participated in school debating and presentation contests. Her parents are her greatest inspiration. They instilled in her the belief that “success is the fruit of hard work,” a principle that remains at the core of her life. She recalls her father taking her through the corridors of the University of Asmara, and in those moments, she promised herself that she would one day walk those halls as a student. Holding onto that conviction, she went to Sawa to complete her high school education and training as part of the national service. Her academic journey in college was demanding, requiring immense energy, determination, discipline, and, most importantly, vision. Guided by these principles, she achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in her second semester, which allowed her to join the College of Medicine. She chose to pursue medicine because her father’s discussions about the field had exposed her to it from an early age. After eight years of rigorous study, she graduated in 2019 and was assigned to Dekemhare Hospital.

The Society of Eritrean Earth Scientists and Mining Engineers held its annual conference on 24–25 July in Asmara under the theme “Professional Engagement for Building Shared Values in Mining.” Chairman Mr. Daniel Woldeyohannes stressed that sustainable mining development rests not only on technical excellence but also on collaboration, knowledge sharing, professional integrity, and collective commitment. The gathering brought professionals together to exchange experience and support the responsible growth of Eritrea’s mining sector.

Fourteen research papers were presented, covering Environmental Impact Assessment, the Bisha Processing Plant, Eritrea’s Mining Strategic Roadmap, Zara Mining updates, and the overall state of the industry. Participants also discussed the role of mining professionals in public awareness and the opportunities and challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence. Founded in December 2019, the Society now has more than 300 members.

𝗘𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗲𝗵𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿

Dear Editor,

With reference to the articles published on Ethiopia's aspirations to acquire a port on the Red Sea, I believe it is appropriate to make a number of clarifications so that such a sensitive issue is presented in a balanced manner and in accordance with the facts.

@HornReview cannot be regarded as an independent and neutral source. Its editorial line appears to be closely aligned with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party and consistently supports the Ethiopian government's policies, including its claims for what it calls "sovereign" access to the sea.

It is also incorrect to state that Eritrea has prevented Ethiopia from making commercial use of the Port of Assab. The use of Eritrean ports can be agreed upon through freely negotiated commercial arrangements and could provide economic benefits for both countries.

However, there must be a clear distinction between port cooperation and any claim of sovereignty, territorial control, or permanent military presence. Ethiopia may negotiate port services and transit corridors, but it cannot claim rights over Assab, which is an integral and indisputable part of Eritrean territory.

Eritrea's position is consistent with international law: it is open to economic cooperation but firmly opposes territorial claims, pressure, or threats. This position is consistent with respect for the Algiers Agreement, the boundaries established by the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission, and the territorial integrity of both states, principles also supported by the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States.

These issues were also discussed during the recent talks in Cairo between Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Massad Boulos, the U.S. President's Senior Adviser for African and Middle Eastern Affairs, during which Eritrea's position on national sovereignty and regional stability was presented.

The narrative concerning Iran also needs to be corrected. It has been suggested that the United States might support Ethiopia's acquisition of an Eritrean port to counter an alleged Iranian expansion in the Red Sea. This is an argument used in an attempt to gain international backing for Ethiopia's aspirations.

Eritrea is not an instrument of Iran or any other power. It maintains normal diplomatic relations with many countries, including Iran, but pursues an independent foreign policy and does not subordinate its territory to the strategic interests of external powers.

Invoking an alleged Iranian threat to justify claims over Eritrean territory is therefore inappropriate. Security in the Red Sea must be ensured in accordance with international law, with respect for the sovereignty of the coastal states, and through the involvement of the countries bordering the sea, without turning the region into an arena for competition among external powers.

Finally, Ethiopia's campaign for access to the sea should also be viewed in the context of its severe domestic political, economic, and security crisis, marked by continuing tensions in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia. There is a risk that the port issue is being used as a nationalist cause to divert attention from internal divisions.

The Ethiopian people need peace, reconciliation, and development, not a new confrontation with a neighboring country.

Eritrea remains ready for regional cooperation based on mutual benefit and respect among sovereign states. Assab can become an instrument of shared development, but only through transparent, consensual, and freely negotiated agreements.

Eritrean delegation led by Mr. Biniam Berhe, Chargé d’Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy in Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, participated in the 20th Extraordinary Summit of the AU Assembly on Health held in Accra, Ghana, on 22 July under the theme “Advancing Justice, Equity, and Universal Health Coverage.”

The delegation shared #Eritrea’s experience in delivering equitable healthcare as a basic human right—provided free or at minimal cost—highlighting that 80% of the population now has access to services within 10 km of their homes, childhood vaccination coverage stands at 98%, and maternal and child mortality rates have significantly declined thanks to the vital role of community health representatives.
