Sydney Airport welcomes the passage of landmark legislation by the Albanese Government—marking the first major reform to Australia’s airport slot system in 27 years. 🎉
These changes are set to deliver better passenger experiences by improving reliability, boosting competition, and offering more choice for travellers. Key highlights:
✅ Stronger compliance measures with penalties for slot misuse.
✅ A new recovery mechanism to reduce cancellations and delays during disruptions.
✅ Flexibility to temporarily increase movements during disruptions, helping flights "catch up."
We commend the Federal Government for seeing through a process that started with the Harris Review back in 2021. We would also like to thank and acknowledge the Coalition and crossbench for their constructive engagement with the legislation. It represents a win for common sense and proves that sensible change is possible.

UPDATE 5.00pm: All runways are now open and the airport has returned to full operation. There may be some knock on impacts into the evening, passengers are encouraged to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.
Earlier today a Brisbane bound flight made an emergency-return to Sydney Airport, landing safely just after 1pm. This departure of aircraft coincided with a grass fire along the eastern side of the airport’s parallel runway, which was brought under control by teams from the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service. It’s not clear at this stage if the two incidents are linked and investigations are continuing.
With the safe arrival of the aircraft, Sydney Airport’s priority is to conduct a full inspection of its parallel runway and to return it to service as quickly as possible. Sydney Airport’s main runway is operational, however passengers should also expect some delays and we thank everyone for their patience.
Passengers who are travelling today are also encouraged to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight, or at https://t.co/ZiAVdfABQb

A total of 3.41 million passengers passed through Sydney Airport in November 2023, a 15% increase on passenger traffic in November last year and a 91.4% recovery compared to November 2019. https://t.co/dJI53ToUoR
T1 International terminal saw 1.26 million passengers pass through in November, a 29.8% increase on the same month last year and a 93.0% recovery rate on November 2019.
Domestic passenger traffic was up 7.8% on the same month last year, with 2.15 million passengers coming through the T2 and T3 Domestic terminals in November.
We are incredibly grateful for our airport ambassadors who volunteer their time to assist passengers, especially during this peak holiday season.
Yvonne has been volunteering for 18 years, and Michael for 4 years.

Domestic passengers at T3 Domestic terminal will soon have a more convenient place to catch @Uber_Australia rides! https://t.co/KsTDR2Jsh3
From 21 December 2023, #Uber riders will meet their driver at the kerbside outside the terminal.
The new Uber pickup zone at T3 will improve the experience for all customers across the domestic precinct, with traffic entering the Priority Pickup area anticipated to decrease by 35%.
Longer-term, we would like to roll out a kerbside pickup zone at our T2 Domestic terminal. In the meantime, T2 passengers accessing Uber rides via the existing Priority Pickup area should have a much better experience, with congestion in that area set to come down by more than a third.
This Christmas, we're partnering up with @GuideDogsAUS to raise funds and support a litter of 5 puppies.
Guide Dogs play a crucial role in providing independence and assistance to people with low vision or blindness, especially when they travel.
It costs $50,000 to breed, raise and train each Guide Dog, and with the help of the travelling public, we hope to raise enough funds to care for the new litter over the next two years.

Sydney Airport is proud to name the new flyover into our domestic precinct after aviation trailblazer, Deborah Lawrie.
She was the first woman in Australia to become a pilot for a commercial airline after a ground-breaking High Court legal battle in 1979. https://t.co/qwckxP6Idn
