First Memorial Day without Sarah and Yaron.

Just a year ago, you were standing with us at the ceremonies, fully present in life, not knowing those would be your final moments here. It’s impossible to grasp the gap between then and now—between the moment you stood beside us, and today, when you are a photograph, a painful memory.

Memory can be deceptive. It appears in the most ordinary moments: when I see a girl on the street in a light dress fluttering in the wind, when a song about young love plays on the radio, when a photo of you suddenly shows up in my feed—so beautiful, so full of life.

And this year, the cherry blossoms in Washington were almost unbearably beautiful. How can you pause to admire them, to breathe in their magic, when you’re no longer here? When this beauty goes on, indifferent to loss, and you are in the cold ground?

Sarah and Yaron, we lost you in the spring,
and we are left with the memories, with the longing, and with hearts that refuse to grow accustomed to your absence.
