Youth sports is on life support.
If you think it’s fine, you’re not paying attention.
Kids age 10-12 are playing way too many tournaments and travel ball. Parents treat it like the World Series. They need less travel, more rest, fueling, and actual development. They’re 12 YO.
The data backs it up:
❌70% of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13.
❌Professionalization (year-round single-sport focus, heavy travel/tournaments) drives overuse injuries, overtraining, and burnout.
❌Nearly 1 in 10 youth athletes experience burnout; up to 35% deal with overtraining.
❌Early specialization before 12-13 raises injury and burnout risks significantly.
Multi-sport kids who rest and play for fun stick around longer and develop better.
Let them be kids. Prioritize recovery, fun, and long-term health over trophies. The best athletes often sample multiple sports early and specialize later.
Who else sees this?

Coaching goes far beyond instruction and training design. It means educating athletes, asking them questions, encouraging curiosity, and giving them a voice. THAT is how you give the work meaning and purpose.
Kids aren't soft.
Every year HS coaches get thousands of kids to voluntarily run 60-80 miles per week in the heat of the summer.
When kids care, when the work has meaning & purpose, they will go to the well.
Pointless hard work on things that don't matter decreases motivation
@ChrisParno We’re so fortunate to have Coach Greene in our backyard here in Central KY! I’ve sat in on multiple teaching sessions with him and he always brings the energy!
Indiana Tech.
Michigan State.
Notre Dame.
Grand Valley State.
I've been in many races where I didn't just think but knew ahead of time I was going to get blasted off the blocks.
Part of the job description as a DIII athlete.
Yet I still ran.
I still practiced.
I still learned from the experience and grew.
Just because you get last doesn't mean you're a loser.
In 2015 there were 604,983 men's high school T&F athletes.
Only 31,278 of them went on to run in college of any form.
Only 1.9% of that original 600k ran D3.
So I could get last and yet still lap everyone on the couch.
I could get last and still build relationships that will last a lifetime.
I could learn and grow and be in the best environment possible to develop as a person and win daily despite a single time on the scoreboard saying otherwise.
If you can learn how to get an ROI on every 'loss', you'll be unstoppable.
But you have to be intentional.
You have to be aware.
You have to have belief in what you're doing.
And you have to be clear on the mission.

As an athlete, I’d hate it if my competitors were as “in your face” as Noah. As a coach, it’d make me uncomfortable if it were my athlete. But as a someone wants what’s best for the sport I understand it, I respect it, and I appreciate it. Keep doing your thing @LylesNoah
I've been in track and field for almost 50 years. It is one of the most difficult sports to be in. Congratulations to all of the great athletes in the world, and I marvel at your talent. But someone has to out themselves out there for all of you to get attention.
