Personally, I wouldn't underestimate humanity so quickly. But really this is an exercise in understanding that science (people) has often unwittenly constrained itself and sometimes it is the open mind that has the freedom to solve hard problems. It's just 1 in 1000000, so quite a bit of wasted time sifting. But AI should also help with that.

@Plinz @anilkseth @philosophybites There is a space increasingly available for bright uneducated people to hypothesize outside of institutional knowledge. I think it is an opportunity for humanity to broaden the idea pathways, but do see that it leaves a bunch of dribble in its wake.

@littmath heard you today at ACM. I'm curious about the broader implications of this work. When LLMs solve these math problems, do you think it's evidence of true mathematical understanding? Of uncovering structure in the data that humans have simply never noticed or assembled? Of the model generating plausible stories that happen to be right the way a stopped clock is right twice a day? Or something else entirely?

@airkatakana That's harsh, but I think it is closer to .001pct, just like the rest of the population. I don't think academia attracts truth seekers more than any other profession. I would also argue that power isn't the overall motivation of the remaining, but that's a different tweet.
