It’s a very busy Saturday. We’ve got 2 piggies arriving from a long distance and another 2 that need collecting. Then we’ve got a kitchen delivery (big DIY project), the piggy waste needs taking to the farm. We need bales of hay and wood shavings + kids and family life!
NEWS: BREAKING NEWS: The Society is thrilled that 22 Parkside in Wimbledon, the pioneering Grade II* listed modernist home by Richard and Su Rogers, has been given to the nation and taken into the care of the @nationaltrust
Designed in 1968-70 for Richard Rogers’ parents, it is both a comfortable, light filled family home, and a highly experimental manifesto house. With structural steel portal frames more commonly found in industrial buildings, prefabricated bus windows, and insultation panels from a refrigerated truck, it’s a protype for modern living unlike almost any other home in Britain. From this acid yellow High-Tech pavilion off Wimbledon Common, to the heights of the Pompidou Centre and the Lloyd’s Building, the house paved the way for the globe-straddling avant garde architecture that followed.
Richard and Su Rogers son, Ben Rogers, commented: “As a family, we wanted to ensure that this remarkable house would be protected, cared for and shared with future generations, rather than remaining a private asset.”
Having raised a significant endowment from individual donors and charitable trusts including Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Sigrid Rausing Trust, the charity now plans to work with the local community and international partners to ensure the building becomes a creative and educational resource for all. The public will get their first chance to visit the house, when 22 Parkside will open on Saturday 12 September as part of London’s Open House Festival.
We can think of no better custodians than the National Trust to safeguard its future, and hope they may take on more pioneering 20th century buildings in the years to come!

A fox made a huge mistake when he wandered onto the museum ship HMS Belfast in 1997. The ship’s cat, Jenny, was on duty and prepared to repel boarders. Jenny attacked with such ferocity that the crew had to rush to save the outmatched fox. Every time the crew tried to isolate the hissing Jenny in a cabin, she would escape to continue battling her vulpine enemy. The fox finally surrendered to the crew and was later released far away from the ship and Jenny.

Rat Catcher Third Class Tom K. Fathoms was placed on the "Prisoner at Large" list of USS Maury in 1953 for repeatedly going AWOL. On three different occasions, RC3 Fathoms left the Maury and was caught raiding the galley of other ships. He also spent three weeks on unauthorized absence in Puerto Rico before being captured by the shore patrol and returned to his ship.

Fred Wunpound was the mascot of HMS Hecate from 1966 until cats were banned on Royal Navy ships in 1975 due to quarantine laws. He got his name because he was bought from an animal shelter for just £1. Leading Seacat Wunpound earned two good conduct badges but also one disgraceful conduct badge for the so-called "fish market incident."
