@WesleyLHuff Earlier councils appear to affirm the 73-book canon. Regional councils in the late 4th century (Rome 382 under Pope Damasus, Hippo 393, Carthage 397) listed the full canon including the Deuterocanonicals. The Council of Florence (1442) explicitly listed and affirmed them.
@howertonjosh Thank you for sharing this take.
IMO, I feel like this sidesteps the actual text, grammar, context, and historical interpretation of Matthew 16:18–19 in order to make the “rock” purely the content of Peter’s confession (which Catholics agrees is pivotal).
@howertonjosh This is royal steward language straight from Isaiah 22:20–22 (the king’s PM who alone holds the key to the house of David). Only 1 gets the keys.
Later (Matt 18:18) the apostles get binding/loosing power, but the keys & the singular “you” stay with Peter. That’s not incidental.
@howertonjosh It also doesn't go into v19. Jesus immediately gives Peter the “keys of the kingdom” + binding/loosing authority
Right after “on this rock”: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven…”
@howertonjosh Jesus immediately pivots to Peter himself as the rock on which the Church will be built, renames him “Rock,” and gives him unique authority. Reducing it to “just the confession” requires ignoring several clear signals in the passage itself.
@PatMcAfeeShow@Jaboowins Really cool to see the # of views on a post, for a prayer on national TV. Seeing a lot of people calling @ToneDigz out for not taking his hat off. Grant some grace - maybe he forgot. Shoutout @OfficialAJHawk for taking his off & @BostonConnr sign of the cross.

Ex: When it says "See 35 tweets", make that number accurate. At times, it might only refresh a fraction of that number.
