Definition of dowry death:

If a woman dies within 7 years of marriage, then it is dowry death.

Snake bite, suicide due to depression or adultery, death due to road accident are dowry deaths. That's how the 6000 number gets reported.

Even woman eloping with truck driver is dowry death.

This isn’t “maintenance” or justice.

This is state-enforced financial slavery for young men.
How did we get here?

In India, family courts often cite ~25% of the husband’s net income as a benchmark for permanent alimony — even in ridiculously short marriages with no children and no significant contribution from the wife. One earns, the other collects for life.

Marriage was supposed to be a partnership.

Now it’s a high-stakes gamble where the downside is lifelong indentured servitude.
Real problems:
• Short marriages treated like lifelong contracts
• Working, educated women still awarded massive ongoing payments
• Men facing salary attachment, jail for defaults, career destruction
• No strong sunset clauses or rehabilitative limits
• Gender-neutral in law, but 99%+ enforced on men

Young men are noticing. Delayed marriages, plunging marriage rates in urban educated classes, “marriage strike” talk — these aren’t coincidences.
We need urgent reform:
• Time-bound maintenance (e.g., max 2-3 years for short marriages)
• Clear guidelines based on marriage length & mutual contributions
• No asset division as well as no endless income transfer
• Stronger scrutiny of earning capacity of the claimant
• True gender neutrality in practice
Fairness isn’t anti-women. It’s anti-exploitation.
End the alimony lottery.

Fix family law before an entire generation opts out completely.

Scary part of dowry death law:

If u get separated from ur wife and file for divorce and if after a year, she commits suicide at her parent's house, then u will be accused of causing a dowry death.

You, ur mother & ur father won't get anticipatory bail. U all have to go to jail.

Remember Delhi Judge Aman Kumar Sharma, who died by suicide on May 2, 2026, alleging mental harassment by his wife (a judicial officer) and her IAS sister-in-law.

Have you seen prime-time debates, widespread media outrage, or strong calls for their immediate arrest and dismissal despite the case involving the same abetment-to-suicide and mental cruelty provisions as cases where the victim is female?

Contrast this with the swift Bar Council suspension in the Twisha Sharma case against the accused husband.

Consistent standards matter for justice, regardless of gender.

This is what Twisha was allegedly shouting at her husband and his family.

If a wife is openly involved in extra-marital relationships, then naturally it raises serious questions and opens multiple angles behind the suicide.

Was there another person involved?

Was there mental harassment from multiple sides?
May be someone was blackmailing her ..
May be a drug dealer angle.

These questions cannot simply be brushed aside.

Even under law, when adultery is proven, maintenance and alimony can be denied because the very foundation of marital obligations gets affected.

Then how can every dispute automatically be labelled as “dowry harassment”?

Marriage cannot become a one-sided arrangement where accountability exists only for the husband and his family while the wife remains beyond questioning.

Time to retire the automatic allegations of “dowry harassment” in the case and investigate all possible reasons behind the suicide.

If there were extra-marital relationships, emotional manipulation, mental harassment, or involvement of other individuals, those angles must also be investigated fairly instead of blindly targeting only the husband and his family.
