I like this way of explaining induced demand: vehicle traffic is more like a gas than a liquid. It expands to fill the space available rather than flows through the system. So the more space you give it, the more traffic you get.

I’ve always found the argument we shouldn’t allow more density in the inner city because of its traffic impacts unconvincing. It’s part of a bigger cycle of car centric thinking:
