Think of what a modern supermarket does. First it tries to imitate the butcher shop with a meat section. And it has a produce section mimicking a farmer’s market. A bakery section like what the guy who baked your bread had.

Enough time goes on - and they sort of keep this up, but the employee turnover is so high, and the city dwellers come and go - so all fake intimacy imitating real friendship is lost. The structures are there, but the sense of comfort goes. People don’t even like one another.

Then some more time goes on and a place like Whole Foods emerges and tries to do what the original supermarkets did - but it’s another step removed from authenticity. Bullshit piled upon bullshit. A total dishonesty covered up by the customer feeling good he can ‘afford’ the ‘really good product.’ That’s ‘a nice piece of fish.’ Those ‘steaks look good.’ That pale tomato is ‘organic.’

Luckily even in cities it’s still possible to drive 30-50 files out to the countryside and buy straight off the farm. Healthier and feels better. The meat is real. The milk is real. The tomato is deep red and meaty inside.

But you have to make an effort at this. And we call it all ‘progress’ and an improvement of ‘GDP.’

‘Progress’ advances in equal measure with bullshit.
