We have to stop volunteering for this trauma porn. You can celebrate your current achievements without constantly feeding the British press the exact tropes they love to print. Foreground the work, not the poverty & deprivation arc.

They will place you on this pedestal that you climbed by stepping on racial exceptionalism, and then write 249 articles whenever they want to push you off it.

When the media constantly frames Black success as this impossible leap from illiteracy to a University of Bristol lecturer, it reinforces a very specific bias. It suggests that the baseline for our continent is abject failure, & anyone who succeeds is a genetic miracle.

White academics don't get this treatment. Their achievements are presented as the natural outcome of their intellect, while Black academics are presented as inspirational anomalies who somehow escaped their natural destiny of failure.

This is far from a celebration of his work; it's trauma extraction to sell stories. He's an MIT-trained engineer who is clearly technically brilliant; let us highlight that. His story cannot forever be viewed from a rearview mirror.

It’s a book anglophones should read: it was my 1st textbook back in school, & there remains no good survey of Nigérien history in English. But later historians have roundly criticized Fuglestad for misrepresenting decolonization & hiding the French war suppressing popular forces.
