Mamata’s “Simple Life” Myth: The Kalighat Charade Exposed

When Akhilesh Yadav visited Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence, many people looked at the house and thought - how humbly she lives, even after 15 years as Chief Minister.

But as they say: the elephant has one set of teeth for eating, and another for show.

Here is the reality.

That Kalighat house falls within the Bhowanipore area - and Mamata deliberately ensured that the entire neighbourhood around it received zero development over the years. The shops nearby were kept deliberately outdated and rundown. The surrounding streets were left untouched, all by design, so that visitors and cameras would capture the image of a Chief Minister choosing to live among the poor and ordinary.

A carefully manufactured illusion of simplicity.

And the control around this illusion was absolute. Until just two days ago, that locality was under an invisible iron grip. Journalists could not enter the lane. Nobody could carry a camera. Residents of her own street could not speak freely to the press. At any given hour, 150 to 200 plainclothes police personnel were stationed in and around the area round the clock.

Now the irony: that house which looks worn and modest from the outside is reportedly equipped with five star amenities on the inside.

And the photo being circulated? That is the actual residence where Mamata spent most of her time, Abhishek Banerjee’s grand and palatial mansion. Lavish. Opulent. Everything the Kalighat house is pretending not to be.

Mamata Banerjee reportedly spent crores staging her poverty for public consumption.

Kejriwal had his ₹33 crore Sheesh Mahal. Mamata has her Kalighat theatre set.
