THE GIFT OF FEAR

A few years ago,
armed robbers visited my home.

They stayed for about thirty minutes.
But they left me with something
that stayed much longer:

fear.

I moved out.

And for the next two to three years,
whenever it was nearing 7:00 p.m.,
my mind would begin to race.

If I had not eaten,
I could not eat.

It was not caution.
It was torment.

Yet I kept telling myself:

“God has not given us
the spirit of fear,
but of power,
and of love,
and of a sound mind.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7

That experience taught me this:

fear is a gift,
but not from God.

It comes through trauma.
Through pain.
Through memory.
Through other people.
Through systems.
Through what happened.
And through what we fear may happen.

Fear paints the worst-case scenario
and calls it wisdom.

But fear is not wisdom.

Fear is a door.
Fear is a snare.

It weakens resolve.
It narrows the voice.
It teaches the mind
to expect disaster.

But perfect love
casts out fear.

So yes,
fear may come.
Fear may knock.
Fear may even arrive
as an unwanted gift.

But it need not be received.

As someone that struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, it takes me back to default as anytime the anxiety starts to stir up

I will speak to my soul and remind me that God hasn't given me a spirit of fear but power, love and soundmind.
