Writer on the loose after 25 years in prison. Costa short story winner, novel, The Silent Women, the dark, sometimes brutal, world of the Victorian asylum...
Phew! Two years of research, reading, thinking, but most of all writing and it’s now ready for pre-order from @LinenPressBooks - The Silent Women, set in a Victorian asylum, link here to pre-order and early reviews! https://t.co/LlaQoYCfHk
When you finish a novel and feel devastated - both that it's finished and because of the way that book has exposed the world and made you think about your place in it and how you behave. #ElizabethStrout

All of the women and girls I teach have the support of Afghan men or they wouldn't be able to access even online learning. Adiba wrote this for her father.
When BBC Radio 4 was making Anatomy of a Cancellation, I had to go to London three times to record interviews. Each time I walked into Broadcasting House I passed chanting protesters with percussion. I saw them mob individual journalists and shout their names. Meantime on twitter, I saw @katierazz denigrated by name by people she'd asked to appear on the programme. Those nasty remarks must have appeared on her phone, very close and personal, like the protesters shouting in journalist's faces. The programme was about the punishments meted out to someone who got on the wrong side of the mob.
I think those pressures show in the finished programme, especially in the way that my language is intensively investigated while that of my critics is not. I think I get more hard questions. But I also think Katie Razzall was brave to take on the material and that only the BBC could have interrogated the story in this way. I think she, and Radio 4, are trying very hard to tell the truth in uniquely tough conditions. I think we have to stop shouting in people's faces. I think we need the BBC.

@KateClanchy1 Still writing - for my sins! Novel published in 2023 The Silent Women , about three women in an asylum - the prison never quite leaves me. Cant tell you how pleased I am to see you so deservedly vindicated
Here’s what I said at the time. Whatever one thinks about this tragic, painful saga, I remain in awe of @KateClanchy1’s ability to foster & promote young people’s poetry writing - incl the poems by Afghani children she’s currently sharing on SM. https://t.co/Bv2cb8POn5
If you are appalled by what @KateClanchy1 suffered, both on X and bcs of her cowardly publishers @panmacmillan as described in @thetimes today, buy her books, esp this one. She is now published @_SwiftPress
Pan Macmillan has apologised to its former author Kate Clanchy three years on from parting company with the writer after she was accused of racial stereotyping, an accusation she denies 👇

“I’d like nothing better than to get Donald Trump + Melania Trump under oath in front of a court reporter and actually find out all of the details of their relationship with Epstein.”
