The West Bengal Budget 2026–27 marks a decisive break from the Trinamool model of governance and lays the foundation for a developed, equitable and progressive Bengal.
With a historic outlay of ₹4,38,775 crore, the budget combines fiscal responsibility with an ambitious development agenda. The budget projects a reduction in key fiscal indicators, with the revenue deficit estimated at 1.02% of GSDP, the fiscal deficit at 2.91%, and the debt stock at 37.98% of GSDP. These projections signal a commitment to fiscal consolidation even as the government continues to manage an inherited debt burden of over ₹8.15 lakh crore.
More importantly, this is a budget focused on outcomes, not optics.
It prioritises the sectors that matter most for Bengal’s future: 35% for infrastructure development, 17% for education and skill development, 12% for health and wellness, 11% for agriculture and rural prosperity, and 10% for industry, MSMEs and employment generation.
The flagship allocations reflect this commitment:
🔹 ₹36,000 crore for Annapurna Yojana, empowering women and strengthening household incomes.
🔹 ₹14,000 crore for VB-GRAM G, creating employment opportunities in rural Bengal.
🔹 ₹13,000 crore for PMAY-G, enabling the construction of 25 lakh rural homes.
🔹 ₹11,000 crore for the Teesta Barrage Project, enhancing irrigation and agricultural productivity.
🔹 ₹10,000 crore through SASCI, leveraging capital support from the Centre.
🔹 ₹5,000 crore for the West Bengal Investment Promotion Framework, aimed at attracting investment and creating jobs.
🔹 ₹4,100 crore for the Lower Sundarban SHORE Project, strengthening resilience and regional development.
🔹 ₹3,100 crore for AB-PMJAY, ensuring universal health coverage.
🔹 ₹2,100 crore for PM-SHRI schools, investing in quality education.
🔹 ₹2,000 crore for the Bakreshwar Mega Floating Solar Project, advancing Bengal’s clean-energy future.
The contrast with the Trinamool years could not be sharper. Bengal suffered from policy drift, dwindling industrial confidence, poor infrastructure creation and a politics that prioritised slogans over solutions. Welfare became a substitute for development instead of complementing it.
This budget restores that balance. It recognises that social welfare and economic growth are not competing priorities. A truly progressive Sonar Bangla requires both, security for the vulnerable and opportunity for the aspirational.
The people of Bengal deserve not just bigger budgets but better outcomes. Roads built, industries established, investments attracted, jobs created, farmers empowered and lives transformed.
This budget is a marked improvement over the Trinamool regime and a significant step towards building the prosperous, confident and aspirational Bengal that its people deserve.
I commend the historic decision taken by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, yesterday, on the solemn occasion of Paschimbanga Divas, which would be instrumental in rectifying a historical wrong.
Suhrawardy Avenue will now be renamed as Gopal Mukherjee Road.
For decades, a major artery of our City bore the name of someone who wilfully misused state power as a weapon, orchestrating the massacre of innocent citizens for sheer political gain. By renaming it after Shri Gopal Mukherjee, the fearless soul who stepped up as a protector-in-chief to defend and save thousands of innocent lives, finally restoration of historical justice will be achieved by honouring a true guardian and savior.
It's time, West Bengal remembers, corrects and honours the Real Heroes.
Myth Punctured. History Restored.
For decades, the Left ecosystem and its intellectual fellow travellers promoted the fiction that Bengal’s identity was somehow separate from the forces that ensured its place within India.
In his article, West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta dismantles that myth with facts.
Had Syama Prasad Mookerjee and countless Bengali Hindus not mobilised against the inclusion of the whole of Bengal in Pakistan, there may never have been a West Bengal. The state exists because of a determined movement that secured a homeland for millions and ensured that a part of Bengal remained firmly within India.
Yet, for years, the contribution of those who fought for West Bengal’s creation was downplayed, distorted, or erased because it did not fit the ideological narrative of the Left and later the Trinamool Congress.
The observance of West Bengal Day is not about division. It is about acknowledging a historic struggle, honouring those who preserved Bengal’s civilisational heritage, and recognising a truth that was deliberately buried.
History belongs to those who defend it, not those who seek to rewrite it. June 20 is a reminder that West Bengal was not gifted; it was secured through vision, sacrifice, and resolve.

The West Bengal Government’s decision to officially observe Paschimbanga Divas on 20th June is a welcome acknowledgement of a defining moment in the state’s history.
The Left and then Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing objection to commemorating 20th June as West Bengal’s Foundation Day has been a denial of historical fact. The truth is that on 20th June 1947, legislators from the non-Muslim majority districts of undivided Bengal voted decisively for partition and for these regions to remain with India. Had that historic decision not been taken, the entirety of Bengal would have gone to Pakistan.
This outcome was made possible by the determined efforts of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee and countless others who fought to secure a homeland for Bengali Hindus in the aftermath of the horrors of Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots. The creation of West Bengal was not an accident of history; it was the result of a conscious democratic choice.
History cannot be erased for political convenience. Recognising 20th June is not about partisanship, it is about acknowledging the sacrifices, struggles and decisions that shaped modern West Bengal.
Marking 20th June as the Foundation Day of West Bengal is an epochal civilisational and ideological moment for the BJP. It is a reaffirmation of the vision and struggle led by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee to secure West Bengal’s place within India and protect the cultural, civilisational and democratic aspirations of its people. By recognising this historic day, BJP honours the forces that shaped Bengal’s destiny and preserves a truth that cannot be erased or rewritten.
How Mamata Banerjee’s TMC regime systematically destroyed West Bengal Police, retired SP Salil Bhattacharjee explains
The former officer says he had arrested Dilip Mondal — whose palatial mansion the ED recently raided — in 2008. Mondal used to be a petty extortionist back in the day. Bhattacharjee says the TMC was basically made of such malcontents. It could come to power only because of anti-incumbency against the Left Front government, he says.
Among several cases of undue political interventions by the Banerjee dispensation, when TMC leader Arab ul Islam led a violent assault against senior CPI(M) leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah in Bhangar, West Bengal, and was arrested, a higher authority called Bhattacharjee to say, “Do you want to get transferred to north Bengal in these final years of your service? Why don’t you look away from troublesome thanas?”
The former cop ridicules the former chief minister’s farcical appearance in courts.
To learn of the other transgressions by the TMC that the veteran covers, watch this interview:
Had the honour to hand over a facsimile of two handwritten epigrams by the influential Indian author Rabindranath Tagore to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. The poems were located in the Swedish National Archives. The gift is a testament to the long-standing relations between Sweden and India.

West Bengal govt in-principal approved handing over 7 National Highway stretches to NHAI & NHIDCL, pending for nearly a year.
This will strengthen connectivity to Sikkim, Bhutan & Bangladesh, link the Darjeeling hills, the Dooars & improve the Bihar-Bengal corridor further.

After Mahua Moitra’s insult to Gujaratis, Sayoni Ghosh is now targeting the Sikh and Punjabi community.
Interestingly, both groups make up a large share of voters in Bhowanipore, the seat Mamata Banerjee is contesting.
For every Bengali, the Ganga occupies a very special place. One can say that the Ganga flows through the soul of Bengal. Her divine waters carry the timeless spirit of an entire civilisation.
This morning in Kolkata, I spent some time on the banks of the Hooghly river, an opportunity to express gratitude to Maa Ganga.
Also had the opportunity to meet boatmen, whose hardworking nature is admirable and morning walkers.
On the Hooghly, reiterated our commitment to work towards the development of West Bengal and the prosperity of the great Bengali people.

*Betraying the Students of West Bengal!*
The Modi Government launched *PM-USHA* with an outlay of *₹12,926 crore* to uplift higher education across India — yet the TMC Government in West Bengal refuses to sign the MOU till date.
While students in other states benefit from new colleges, upgraded universities and modern infrastructure, Bengal's youth are being denied their rightful share of Central funds — purely due to state government apathy and political obstruction.
*206 units worth ₹903 crore approved for West Bengal. Funds are waiting.* But Mamata Banerjee's government won't sign.
Who is the real enemy of Bengal's students?
