"Let's think of the Second World War, in 1939 the German-Polish war started as a local war, and what was the end? That escalation was not caught - if I can put it like that - in time by a peace process, and it led to the Second World War," Gábor Böröndi, the new Chief of the Hungarian Defence Forces General Staff said this morning on tv.

It already seemed that Hungarian-Polish relations relations are at an all time low, but such comments could undermine them even further. Böröndi's suggestion that the Allies should have sacrificed Poland and negotiate with Hitler instead of declaring war on Nazi Germany, well, this has just made him persona non grata in a lot of places I think.

Böröndi (standing between Orbán and president Katalin Novák on this picture) has been appointed by Hungarian minister of defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky (on the right), who's been conducting a serious purge in the army - firing hundreds of senior officers and 50 military intelligence officers.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky is a former businessman who had a joint venture with Russia's state-owned rail giant, Transmashholding. His HR policy is starting to show its first results.
