Databricks just signed a Series K term sheet at >$100B valuation to scale two flagship products:
🔥 Lakebase — serverless Postgres with true compute/storage separation
🧠 Agent Bricks — agentic framework with built-in reasoning guardrails for enterprise data

Yeah, a Snowflake $SNOW competitor (Databricks? Microsoft?) definitely acquired or is acquiring Tabular (managed Iceberg; run by team that built Iceberg).
You can see this in the language of this post and in the PR. "The Iceberg community" this, and "the Iceberg community" that...
It shoots at the people running Iceberg/Tabular.
This is classic PR spin.
-Rush an offering to market ahead of a competitor.
-Offering pretty clearly competes with Databricks' Unity, which has been in market and adopted for some time now.
-Make the PR about "community" rather the people running the project/product...Silicon Valley always over flatters founders so any departure from that means there's a rift.
-Altimeter led the last round in Tabular ~1 yr. ago. They've historically been involved in a lot of Snowflake $SNOW M&A and with Brad Gerstner decreasing his position in Snowflake earlier this year, I get the sense Altimeter can no longer call the shots and use Snowflake's balance sheet as a bank to get liquidity for Altimeter's private company investments...so Tabular may have had to go shop around.
-All in all, these table formats/lakehouse products will effectively drive down ARPUs for Snowflake customers if they are indeed widely adopted. It may keep Snowflake stickier for a time in its existing customer base, but the adoption of Iceberg et al. at existing customers will kill ARPUs/NRR and, most importantly, shift workloads at Snowflake customers to lower margin storage away from higher margin compute, in many cases. Remember: Snowflake's high gross margins are centered on compute.
Our journey came to an end last night. I am incredibly proud to coach this group. We’ve got a locker room that cares deeply about each other’s success.
We’re so grateful for the support from all teams on campus & the W&J community as a whole. It’s been an amazing ride.

What an incredible day for our program. We’ve been through some dark days and it took 6 years of lessons to get to this point. This one was for those guys that helped get us here. We are so thankful for the support. I love this team.
