Puerto Rico🇵🇷 means volumes to the People of Puerto Rico🇵🇷 as it is the single most important component of our identity, our Island. Puerto Rico🇵🇷 is also the oldest “colony” in the world🌍. I use quotation marks because we were removed from the United Nations as a “colony” since we became a US Territory🇺🇸 and as such, we were allowed to have a local government. However, and this is the big catch, as a US Territory🇺🇸, we “belong to but are not part of” the United States🇺🇸. But, another big catch, the US Congress🇺🇸 holds total power over Puerto Rico🇵🇷, its local government, and its People.

The main issue with this is that we are US Citizens🇺🇸 but Amend 14 of the US Constitution🇺🇸 does not apply to us, as we are not a “state”. Meaning, to the Declaration of Independence, that for which Puerto Ricans fought alongside other Americans in the American Civil War🇺🇸, we are NOT "created equal". Worst yet, we are US Citizens🇺🇸 but not given the inalienable right, as per the US Constitution🇺🇸, of the “consent of the governed” since residents of Puerto Rico🇵🇷 are not allowed to vote for the President of the United States🇺🇸 nor have voting rights through state representatives or senators in US Congress🇺🇸. Yeah, I hear you, very Un-american indeed.

All that puts the People of Puerto Rico🇵🇷 in a quest for a “sense of us”. And we gain that through a common identity. In that case, that common identity is our beloved Island (also represented by its flag). That is why when we go to the Olympics, World Baseball Series, MLB, boxing, or even Miss Universe beauty pageants, we pay significant attention to how we perform and distinguish ourselves. We want to be seen, felt, and recognized. We have a natural thirst for recognition and need respect as People, due to the fact that we have never been treated, politically, as citizens. And understandably so. We have always had a 3rd above us (first Spain🇪🇦, now United States🇺🇸). For a US Citizen🇺🇸, which represents the continental US🇺🇸, to take our very unique and single object of our identity, our Island (also represented through our flag), and called it an “island of garbage” is literally the same as saying “your identity is garbage”.

Make no mistake about it. Puerto Ricans have fought, as proud US Citizens🇺🇸, in every US War (including the American Civil War🇺🇸) and Puerto Ricans have made significant contributions to the United States🇺🇸 (and the United States🇺🇸 has made significant and invaluable contributions to Puerto Rico🇵🇷). Any Puerto Rican that moves to the continental US🇺🇸, is then “treated equal” and has the inalienable right of the “consent of the governed”. But if you reside in Puerto Rico🇵🇷, even as the US Citizens🇺🇸 that we are, it’s a different story, an Un-american story. The fact that the US Citizens🇺🇸 residing in Puerto Rico🇵🇷 are caught in these “territorial” twilight zone, “belong to but not part of” (as stated by the US Supreme Court🇺🇸 not once, but twice), with no "consent of the governed", demonstrates clearly that not all US Citizens🇺🇸are “treated equal”. Hopefully someday, these inalienable and constitutional American rights of the American Citizens🇺🇸, “consent of the governed” and “all men are treated equal”, are finally addressed and put to rest and, as such, we become less Un-american.

Hope this gives context to what is going on here.
