@KeeganMatheson Great piece. I have one minor quibble and it’s one almost everyone makes: “Rojas’ throw home beat Kiner-Falefa by an inch”
While he was OUT by an inch, Rojas’ throw beat him by about four feat. Smith’s foot inexplicably coming off the plate is what made it inches.
@Baseball_Jenn A Whole Different Ball Game. Marvin Miller was formerly head of steelworkers' union, brought in by MLBPA to rep players and changed the game for all sport$ after that. Baseball/history/economics. Villain to owners, hero to players. Incredible read. https://t.co/YVvW5vTUNC
@DownToBlack That was my character limit. Not really looking for you to do the work but any idea where I might even be able to dig for it. Pls and tx. My point is, if we are going to look at the data for one possible outcome we don't want, we should compare it to the outcome that we might.
@DownToBlack Chris. Data is solid. But I don't blame IKF. Maybe Jays/MLB will think on this sitch (& sliding at home bases loaded <2out; ie Betts in top of 10!). That said, hoping you can help pls? Looking for percentage of runners on 3rd, bases full, <2out, who scored on grounder to fielder.
@StevenSansone24@BlueJaysDad Agree. Mookie did the exact same thing in the top of the 10th with bases loaded and grounder to Giménez. You’d think smart baseball coaches would have learned. The problem is they don’t reinforce running through home on a force.
@WhitMerrifield Exact same situation top of the 10th for Dodgers. Mookie Betts slid feet first. If this is all so obvious, Dodgers' coaches would have told Mookie to run through home. I do think this slide philosophy might change in coming years because of the visibility of this one though.
@JoshuaHowsam@caseyboguslaw All MLB coaching is to blame. Same situation in 10th for Dodgers after they should have learned from IKF sliding a half inning before? Mookie slides so his coach clearly didn't say don't slide. We will see a correction on this next year.
Second guessing IKF is brutal. Lead? He was told. Slide? He shouldn't slide. 3B coach's job to say so. Betts ONE INNING LATER, same sitch in 10th? Slid. (Out by more but clearly sliding.) LA coach didn't warn him AFTER SEEING IKF. MLB will market correct.
