I think we do have an identity. Mostly given to us by the rest of the world. We take pride in it and it is the world that says we are "not American" because we are easily recognizable as "not American". With your nation divided right down the middle and a leader who has turned your policies upside down, your identity is now unrecognizable and confusing.
