My Criteria: These selections balance artistic excellence with moral seriousness. I aimed for genre and thematic variety, but otherwise simply picked the best films regardless of overlap. A future version may limit entries to one film per director.

A filmmaker's politics is irrelevant, but cinema should do more than kill time or mistake transgression for depth. If you're looking to catch up on movies, this is a great place to start.
