a dear friend who was a distinguished poet used to complain bitterly about local bookstores that promoted bestsellers & not books of poetry; when it was gently pointed out to him that bestsellers kept the bookstores open so that his poetry books could be sold as well, & that without the bestsellers there would be a Starbucks in place of the store, he seemed utterly confounded & had no reply.
yes it is true that "young white male writers" have a difficult time finding publishers but this is because--(surprise!)--male readers don't support "young white male fiction writers" to the degree that female readers will support writers of fiction whoever they are but skewing to the female for reasons of identification, empathy.
most bookstores are not non-profits. they are actually hoping to sell books. if you don't buy their books, don't complain that publishers are reluctant to publish those books which you are not buying.
