I failed, where he succeeded marvelously many times, which only made me admire him more. Thwarted, I went to work for the local Fort Worth newspaper – again, just like Dan – albeit at the Star-Telegram and not the lamentably defunct Fort Worth Press. 3/5

Years later, when I became a golf writer (coincidence?), Dan befriended me at the majors. That meant so much to me. He made me feel welcome. I was fortunate over the year to dine, drink and hang out with Dan many times. Did two minutes ever go by without a laugh? 4/5
