Osama bin Laden authorized the operation. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the principal planner. Nineteen men hijacked four commercial airliners:

• 15 were Saudi
• 2 were from the United Arab Emirates
• 1 was Egyptian (Mohamed Atta, who led the team)
• 1 was Lebanese

They crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth (United 93) into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.

Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility. The 9/11 Commission Report and subsequent investigations confirmed this.

Bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in 2011; Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in 2003 and later convicted.
