Golf fans are much closer to the action, and when 95% are quiet during shots, those hurling abuse stand out like a sore thumb. Tennis is a better comparison.

But if people feel that strongly about it, they can do what I did. Do the slightest bit of digging, and your belief will be dispelled. I’m am not pro-Starmer, but misinformation is a problem on any side.
