1/2 I'm honoured to be part of The Practice Project, a joint project between AEI and @researchED1. Here's my contribution: "Five Math Misconceptions That are Holding Students Back"
I've also paired it with a podcast episode (link below).

This week I'm taking on five common misonceptions in math that are holding students back. Too many students are falling behind in math and I'm on a mission to fix it! Make sure to tune in!

📣 Good news — I'm running a FREE, 45-minute online PD session: Hard Thinking for Everyone.
If, as Daniel Willingham reminds us, "memory is the residue of thought," the real question in any lesson is whether all students are attentive and cognitively engaged — or whether we're relying on poor proxies that just look like learning.
What is it about?
I'll walk through poor proxies, the principles, and the strategies of hard thinking, and outline the ETA framework — Everyone, Together, Anyone — three deliberate ways to sample student thinking. The talk will be about 45 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.
When is it?
📅 Saturday 15th August
🇦🇺 8:00–9:00pm AWST (Perth) / 10:00–11:00pm AEST (Sydney/Melbourne)

I often get emails asking about training for Facts on Fire. I will be doing a training for The Windward Institute on July 13 and 14, 9-12 ET. I will be covering how to use Facts on Fire 2.0 and using the resources for more targeted intervention as well. If you are interested, check it out. Registration, from my understanding, includes access to the video recording for 6 months (in case the time is an issue). https://t.co/gbDz451T9A
Why is it that so many teacher trainers are not familiar with the science of learning? Or even actively oppose it?
I think the case of differentiated instruction is useful. The *best* case that can be made for differentiated instruction is that the evidence is inconclusive. It is also hugely time-consuming for teachers to enact.
Yet it is enthusiastically endorsed everywhere from teaching standards to there being entire units on it at training colleges. If this is not a response to evidence, what is it?
It is a response to ideology. This ideology maintains that everyone is different and special—which is a pleasant idea—and so they need their own unique mix of teaching methods—which is probably untrue. Nobody ever explains what evidence a teacher would use to decide this mix. They just need to *know their students*.
And, of course, teacher trainers do not have to suffer the consequences of this approach. It is for others to do the suffering.
“What would it look like to design a coherent instructional system from the ground up?"
Probably like the math books from the 50's and 60's that have been said to fail thousands of Ss.

So thankful for @nsachdeva2019 and @amandavande1 who continue to share their wisdom with us. Teachers and leaders- have a listen. Without this knowledge, school improvement will continue to be elusive. https://t.co/1l852QNkee
I updated the list of free resources on my website to include free Math resources:

I would love help expanding this list. What websites offer free resources that you trust, for Math?

The House Appropriations Committee has put National Reading Panel, the Sequel IN THE BUDGET, to my great delight.
I've advocated for a new NRP specifically to address today's most animating questions, such as "the relationship between reading books rather than passages in building reading stamina; the relationship between writing instruction and reading comprehension; optimal amounts of time for different aspects of reading and writing instruction in the average classroom; the essential components of effective reading curricula."
Most of these were completely unaddressed by the original NRP, others were lightly-addressed.
Also, it has been 25 years. There is new research, and a new landscape as we put the Reading Wars broadly in our rearview mirror. The primary animating questions are different today.
HT @Robert_Aderholt@rosadelauro@JoshHarder@CongMikeSimpson and colleagues for prioritizing this idea!

Anyone wanting a deeper dive on myth busting regarding interventions for children and adolescents with additional needs might be interested in this 2026 text by Dr Caroline Bowen (@speechwoman) and yours truly:

This super myth buster from Steplab about evidence-informed approaches to SEN/ additional needs provision. Summary: lots of things we sometimes think are useful, have no evidence to back them up, or weak evidence. In some cases they may even harm. Fidget spinners, Zones of Regulation, Mindfulness…just because we want something to work doesn’t mean that it does.
University of California STEM professors want standardized tests back due to severe math deficiencies among students:
“We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle school mathematics”
“The current admissions metric, based primarily on GPA & essays, can no longer reliably distinguish readiness for university-level STEM majors in an era of severe grade inflation & AI assisted application essays”
