Just wondering, does your academic medical center have a smart way to triage newly diagnosed brain masses to an appropriate admitting service without nearly setting off World War III by way of dispo war? #neurosurgery
@sarahbellumPA I has never thought of it but I wish that our applicants had a chance to meet the APPs in our program. They are a huge and wonderful part of my experience of residency.
Due to #COVID hospital crowding, this week I talked 5 people through new diagnoses of brain tumors in exposed, noisy ER hallway beds. I repeat every third sentence because it's hard to hear through my Darth Vader-esque mask.
This is a dystopian mess. #WearAMask#neurosurgery
@rogerha @CyclingScience1 @CCriadoPerez Agreed! Full publication under review now which addresses methodological concerns. Observational, database driven studies like this are useful to start conversations among stakeholders about the findings, but as you say, they are limited in providing “proof.”
Putting patients with new brain masses in emergency room hallway beds rather than a private room does not set me up to deliver the horrible news that they might have brain cancer in a comforting way. Can we fix this? #neurosurgery
Whichever architect decided that all the sunlight should be in the stairwell instead of in our workroom should have thought about the needs of people who work from before sunrise until after sunset. My vitamin d needs a boost
If you are interested in reading what made an immigrant neurosurgeon like me fall in love with the US, and my thoughts on #racism#georgefloyd#lebanon#war and the social turmoil that is tearing the US apart, here is my essay published in JNS today. Peace https://t.co/z3dQSQPWhn
The reclamation of streets for vulnerable road users is critical for safety. Communities should be asking, which corridors can be kept clear of cars after reopening? https://t.co/t3gtTimJ3X
Could the hospital run without the phone operators available 24/7 to help fledgling interns find anybody in the hospital system? I think not.
I’m not going to say I have a favorite operator.... but it’s definitely Sherry
Good old pen and ink! Overview of the spinal venous system, both intradural and extradural components, which are separate by the dural crossing of the radiculomedullary veins. New article by Dr. Gailloud on the antireflux mechanism located at this point: https://t.co/dA3LH96340
On the #neurosurgery trail, programs celebrated intern curriculums with no #gensurg rotations. I'm glad for my time with @brownsurgery. I know my colleagues better, learned new ideas about treating shared patients, and can collaborate better with people outside neurosurgery.
Spoke to a #neurosurgery applicant about the application process. It felt like they were on "Love is Blind." How we can look outside of medicine to improve the match process this year? What can we learn from dating apps and social media about digital relationship building? 1/2
Relative to the general population, the neurosurgical workforce is disproportionately white and male. We should talk about it. 5pm today:

This piece is a bit old, but, as a bicycle safety researcher and advocate, I am hopeful that some of these street closures might remain after the virus. #covid19#silverlining

@lola_chambless @AANSNeuro I am interested to know whether attrition rate is the best metric of the overall success of the match. How might we evaluate the loss of potential success in poor but survivable matches? Thoughts on other metrics that speak the specific features of the field?
