Hey folks, I started a couple years ago with the new year’s resolution of reading 6 books in a year. I’d gotten out of the habit and that seemed lofty. Somehow, I made it and found it so enjoyable that I set this past year’s goals at 12 books, with half being non-fiction, and the other half being what I typically enjoy.

Of course, the underlying goal was to broaden my horizons so to speak on various subjects I’m not typically well-versed in. Also, to rekindle what I believe to be one of life’s most rewarding hobbies, but also one that seems to be in decline in this world of smart phones, binge watching, and unending stimuation. The substance of said hobby seems to be dwindling as well. Of course I’m talking about reading. I have yet to find a modern author that hasn’t fallen victim to the same temptation of putting out surface level, mind numbing, and intellectually void material. But I digress…

Here is a quick summary of the experiences with my 2025 Reading List.

Never Finished by David Goggins – 4 out of 10
It failed to capture the magic of his first book. Or maybe I was just in a different place this time around. That being said Goggins is still a freak of nature and inspiring regardless. The greatest lesson I’m learning from his mindset is that you really can tell your mind that you aren’t finished and it will behave if you insist.

Embrace the Struggle by Zig Ziglar – 5 out of 10
A former co-worker put me on to this book. Written by an already established motivational speaker Zig Ziglar after he had suffered a stroke. The book is woven with stories of people who endured various calamities in life and came out the other side. The biggest lesson I took from the book was a) how grateful I should be for my status in life and b) the struggle always comes to an end, how you come out of it is entirely dependent on giving yourself completely to God and letting Him carry you.

Some Like It Darker by Stephen King – 9 out of 10
Another of King’s collection of short stories. I may be biased (but I don’t believe I am), King is unrivaled as the greatest storyteller in my lifetime. There simply isn’t anyone in the same stratosphere. The nice thing about short stories is that you can pick them up and put them down at your convenience. Definitely a worthy read.
The Ageless Brain by Dale Bredesen – 10 out of 10
This one took me for quite a ride. The author makes the bold claim that we can prevent alzheimers, and an even bolder claim that it can be reversed. From healthy eating, dangers of sugar, various exercise techniques/environments, baseline cognitive testing, microplastics, and lots more. There is quite a bit to ahem… digest in this. I found the majority of what was written to be one the most enlightening I’ve read on overall health. I would recommend anyone on the wrong side of 30 to give it a read.

Desperation by Stephen King – 2 out of 10
Remember what I said earlier about King, well that didn’t apply here. Anyone who follows him knows he went through a cocaine and booze era. Well, this was written in the height of that. Grueling read about a town in Desperation, NM that unearthed a demon that had long been buried. Reader beware…

Raising Men by Eric Davis – 1 out of 10
There’s a running joke about navy seals and how they all retire to write books. It is because of guys like this author that the joke exists. The writings are very surface level advice I believe I’d hear sitting on a barstool or while fishing with that one guy... but if you weren’t raised with any foundational moral code, I guess maybe I could see the value here. What do I know though, I’ve never written a book.

Revival by Stephen King – 10 out of 10
Very good. One of his better novels actually. A fictional story about tragic loss, and one person’s fascination with electricity and how much we don’t know about its medically rehabilitative effects (there’s an electrical joke somewhere in this paragraph). Worth the read. I actually started this the year it came out. I was a bit more of a zealot, and it was reading an awful lot like sacreligious tripe. What’s that saying don’t judge a book by its first hundred pages? Something like that.

Atomic Habits by James Clear – 8 out of 10
This was a great roadmap for how to get into a rhythm building good habits. What goes into the development of a habit, be it good or bad. It is one I’m going to read again as there’s a lot to digest. Very much worth the read and I recommend it to anyone.

Korean War by Max Hastings – 7 out of 10
The forgotten war. I’ve asked a few gray hairs (old folks) about the Korean war and how we’d gotten into it. Most had foggy recollections. Most can talk about the rise of the 3rd reich, the empire of the sun, the war again vietnamese commies, but mention the Korean war and it’s crickets. This inspired me to check it out. Max Hasting’s telling had the highest reviews so I jumped in and finally learned what started it all. We tried to establish a good ole American system of government in Korea, and it exploded…imagine that…

Cry Havoc by Jack Carr – 8 out of 10
Guilty pleasure of mine. Another installment in the Terminal List series. This one goes back in time to cover Reece’s father in the Vietnam war. James Reece’s father Tom is carrying out MACV-SOG (Special Operations Group) campaigns into Laos and Cambodia. Highly entertaining if you’re into that kind of stuff.

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie – 10 out of 10
This is my second time through the book. It’s a reminder that the world doesn’t revolve around you. Anyone you interact with doesn’t always believe that and will often reward those that are willing to listen to them as they exemplify traits suggesting it does revolve around them. Much more to take from the book, but that kind of stuck with me.

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury – 7 out of 10
This one affected me in a variety of ways. Some of the 300 word articulations as to just how cold the weather is, or how dark it is, etc made reading a pain. The philosopher in me was entirely titillated. There are some quotes that made me ponder for a bit. Here are a few favorites:
“Now, look, since when did you think being good meant being happy?”
“Since always.”
“Since now learn otherwise. Sometimes the man who looks happiest in town, with the biggest smile, is the one carrying the biggest load of sin. There are smiles and smiles; learn to tell the dark variety from the light. The seal-barker, the laugh-shouter, half the time he’s covering up. He’s had his fun and he’s guilty. And men do love sin, Will, oh how they love it, never worse than when they give it a pretty name.”

“How easy, thought Will. Just this once, thought Jim. But then, thought Charles Halloway, once you start, you’d always come back. One more ride and one more ride. While we've spent years bonding and growing our love for our brothers in arms, they are often thrown into a life of loneliness. While we are endeavoring to make light of our situations through a myriad of card playing, smokin and jokin, or any number of shenanigans, they are alone. Worrying about that terrifying moment when their spouse may have departed from this world. While we have shoulders to lean on, they don't. Sure, they have programs in place to provide support, but they do little to imitate the bond we’ve built.

Then when we return, sometimes a shell of our former selves, they must help put the pieces back together. Sometimes we don't return, and they must spend a lifetime learning to live without the person they committed to spend their life with, or worse, they spend a lifetime raising children to cope and live a normal life without their mother/father.

Celebrate this day how you wish, but I’m choosing to remember this as a day to honor the spouses left behind to hold the line.
