Sad to note the passing of one of my Red Sox guys, Mike Greenwell was just 62. A good guy,fierce hitter and a solid interview. When he was a rookie, I got him to show us how to tame a wild, if inflated, gator, since that was his nickname. Plus this awesome Ned Martin highlight.

should have beat Jose Canseco for MVP in '88....

but there's this other thing... the Gator thing... not only is this dude the heir apparent to Ted and Yaz and Rice, but when he's not playing baseball... he's freaking WRESTLING ALLIGATORS...

can you imagine a more made-for-young-dudes to root for athlete? an MLB all-star who also wrestles alligators?

so he puts together a few all-star seasons before he fizzles out of baseball in the mid-90s and instead of fading away he does another awesome thing: he starts racing stock cars... insane...

i've been fascinated with Greenwell since I was 8...

i even tried several times to write his biography, tracking his kids down at the mini-golf course Greenwell owned... but he wasn't interested. no problem.

his life still was a hell of a story.

i've had this poster up in every place i've lived since the 3rd grade. it anchors my garage gym now. always will.

People forget how good Mike Greenwell was in 1988. Only Canseco had a better year (steroids enhanced). Greenwell was above Kirby Puckett, Dave Winfield, Dennis Eckersley, Wade Boggs, Alan Trammell, Paul Molitor, teammate Dwight Evans, Frank Viola, Robin Yount et all. RIP 🕊⚾️
