The christian life is a daily continual return—back to the gospel, back to grace, back to Jesus (Heb 3:12). We don’t just need information; we need transformation. That comes through daily meditation on the gospel, where we practice repentance and faith in the presence of our Redeemer.
When I was in college I had a wise mentor encourage me to spend 1 hour a day, 1 morning a week, 1 day a month, and 1 week a year with Jesus. I have not always followed it consistently but I think that's pretty good advice if approached with gospel freedom.
Here’s a suggestion for how to spend an hour with God using The Gospel Turn framework:
1. READING (10 min)
Ask: What is God highlighting in His Word to me?
Spend time reading His Word devotionally.
Journal: Write down one verse that is nuclear.
2. HONESTY (10 min)
Ask: Where am I?
Slow down and name what’s happening in your heart—your feelings, thoughts, and desires. Let God meet you where you are, not where you think you should be.
Journal: What are you feeling? Thinking? Desiring?
3. REPENTANCE (10 min)
Ask: Whose voice have I been listening to? What did I do/am I tempted to do?
Turn from lies, fear, and self-reliance. Confess your sin and unbelief. Repent not just of wrong behavior but of the false stories you’ve believed.
Journal: What lies have I believed? What sin do I need to confess?
4. FAITH (10 min)
Ask: What did Jesus do? What is He doing?
Meditate on Christ’s finished work for you. Preach the gospel to yourself. Rest in His obedience, righteousness, and nearness.
Journal: What is true about Jesus? What is true about me in Him?
5. COMMUNION (10 min)
Ask: Where is Jesus now?
Abide in His presence. Listen to what He is saying in His Word. Worship. Let the Spirit apply grace deep into your soul.
Journal: What is God saying to me through His Word today?
The goal isn’t performance—it’s an encounter with His presence. The gospel turn is a Spirit-led rhythm of drawing near to God, again and again. He is already near. Will you turn toward Him today?
