@RachelOrr@PieCorbett@AmmarMerhbi I think there's something to be said for how much of it is caught. The absolute best readers in Primary are not those with additional lessons or tuition, but those whose home lives have made it a culture.
The best schools do the same, alongside skilled teaching.
@TTRadioOfficial Reading at pace can have a hugely powerful impact on developing reading fluency to high levels. You can only ensure that in the classroom. Even those who can read it at home may struggle to do so and find making meaning challenging as they read.
@PieCorbett Other recent crackers (albeit ones you probably know) include Impossible Creatures (Rundell) and In the Shadow of the Wolf Queen (Kiran Millwood Hargrave).

“Today I lost my car keys while running deep in the forest.
At the end of my run—breathless and filled with anxiety—I retraced my steps, bracing for the worst...
But then, among the trees, I found something unexpected:
a small circle made of branches, like a handmade compass.
And in the center, perfectly placed, were my keys.
Someone—a kind stranger—had found them.
And left that simple, clever, beautiful sign.
A silent gesture, yet full of humanity.
In a world that moves fast and often forgets to care for others,
a gesture like that speaks louder than a thousand words.
To whoever you are: thank you.
Today, you were my little miracle in the forest.”

@smithsmm@nicolajharvey A world of nothing but extracts and no reading of full books would be shocking... Though I did work in a school like that once. 😳
@nicolajharvey@smithsmm Ours largely does both. 3 novels we will 100% read all of, 6 more we will either read all of *or* study part of and make readily available for the children. Try to keep some flex in there for teachers to identify new texts.
But I think many just focus on the class story.
@nicolajharvey@smithsmm Reading spines, I *think*, tend to focus on the R4P whole class novel rather than the more explicit reading lessons. I could be wrong on this!
@smithsmm I think you can use extracts well. We use chapter 1 / prologues to a bunch of books to expose them to the richness that's out there (and make sure the books are waved at them and placed in the book corner). Plus the class novel. Plus couple more novels across the year.
