It was in 1932. Grrrrrrin grrrrrrin, the phone rang. The Minister of Defence, Sir George Pearce, was the one calling. “Good morning sir,” greeted Major G.P.W. Meredith who received the call. “Morning Major! Listen attentively. Some of our veterans who fought and returned from the World War were settled in the western area of the country and they’ve taken up farming as their retirement vocation. However, they’re being disturbed by some flightless birds known as emus. Get a unit of soldiers and go wipe those emus out!”

“Consider it done sir!” Major G.P.W. Meredith said, before dropping the phone receiver.

I wasn’t there but the conversation must have gone roughly like that. Anyways, the major took his soldiers and off they went.

The first battle took place on November 2, 1932. The soldiers spotted about 50 emus near Campion and set up their machine guns. Kikikikikikikikiki, ratatatatatat, they started firing. The emus actually waited for them to start firing before scattering in all directions. The birds were surprisingly fast and agile, and only a few were hit. There were about 20,000 emus in the area then and they just killed less than 50. 

Two days into the mission, the soldiers tried a new plan. They waited to ambush a huge flock of the birds, holding their fire until the birds were very close. "At least, we should kill nothing less than a thousand this time around," they thought. When the birds were close enough, they opened fire. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for the emus, one of the two machine guns jammed, and they only managed to kill a few birds. Next, they tried shooting from a moving truck. You know, the type we watch in movies? Well, that didn't work either.

Over the next few weeks, the soldiers continued their battle against the emus. They chased the birds, fired their guns, and tried different tactics, but the emus seemed unstoppable. They broke into small groups, making them hard to target. They were tough, resilient, and seemed to know just how to dodge the bullets. In fact, according to records, Major G.P.W. Meredith was impressed by the emus’ ability to survive bullet wounds: “They can face machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks,” he said.

Major Meredith and his men were frustrated. They had expected an easy victory but found themselves in a strange and difficult war. After almost a month of trying, they had only managed to kill less than 1000. Realizing they were fighting a losing battle, the soldiers finally retreated. The war, which was later known as “Emu War,” was over. The soldiers returned to their barracks. They refuse to go out and embarrass themselves again.

The government later introduced a bounty scheme. Farmers or hunters who could kill emus were rewarded. This worked only a little too. The farmers later resorted into making good fences that kept the emus out. That, ladies and gentlemen was The Great Emu War of 1932 in Australia

THE VERSATILE LW CONUNDRUM

I think the Enciso discussion is actually more interesting than people will admit.

The two Morgans are popular names for obvious reasons. Morgan Rogers gives you power, ball-carrying, Premier League production and huge upside. Morgan Gibbs-White gives you creativity, leadership, set-piece quality and proven Premier League influence. But if the quoted prices are anywhere near reality, then Chelsea are looking at £100m+ territory for either player. At that point, the question is not just “who is better?” It becomes “who is better value?”

That is where Iliman Ndiaye makes a lot of sense to me. He may not have the headline output of the Morgans, but the profile is very useful. The dribbling, work rate, ball-carrying and defensive effort jump out. He can play wide, central, between the lines, and he gives you something Chelsea often lack: a player who can carry the ball through pressure and still work hard without it. If Everton are talking around the €50m–€70m range, that is far more realistic than chasing a £100m+ Premier League star.

But Julio Enciso is the wildcard.

His 2025/26 numbers are genuinely strong: 42 games, 12 goals, 9 assists, 21 goal involvements, 7.13 rating, 49 key passes, 16 big chances created and 72 successful dribbles. Even allowing for the Ligue 1 context, that is not ordinary production. He has end product, creativity, ball-carrying and that unpredictable final-third spark. He has also tasted Premier League football before, so he is not completely unknown to the intensity.

The only issue is timing.

For me, Enciso looks like a future Chelsea option, not necessarily the immediate answer. In Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, he could work as a left-sided inside forward, a second striker, or a creative 10-type profile behind the main striker. But if Chelsea need someone to come in now and solve the LW/LAM role against both open games and low blocks, I still think Ndiaye is the safer bet.

Enciso has the numbers. Ndiaye has the maturity of profile.

So my take is simple: do not ignore Enciso, but do not rush him either. Let him keep developing at Strasbourg, keep monitoring the ceiling, and if he continues this trajectory, Chelsea can bring him in when the role is clearer. But for next season, if the choice is between spending crazy money on Rogers or Gibbs-White, or making a smarter move for Ndiaye, I am leaning towards Ndiaye.

Enciso is the exciting internal option.
Ndiaye is the ready-made tactical fit.
Chelsea fans, would you rather save the money and bring Enciso through the BlueCo route, or spend properly now on Ndiaye or Go Crazy and pay 100m + for any of the Morgans?
