240-Year-Old Writer Automaton is the Ancestor of Today’s Computers
"The Writer" is a clockwork automaton created in the 1770s by renowned Swiss watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz. This intricate mechanism, capable of writing up to 40-character sentences, still functions perfectly after nearly 240 years.
Its ability to mechanically reproduce human writing was groundbreaking for its time, requiring immense patience, skill, and creativity to design and build, while also giving the machine the appearance of a boy.
