BREAKING: All is set for the official defection of the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate in the 2023 election Malam Isah Ashiru Kudan.
It's over for Uba Sani in Kaduna State. 🤝🔥💪💪
BREAKING: Counsel to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has accused the ICPC of engaging in political persecution following media reports alleging that the former governor owns multi-billion naira properties in Egypt.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ubong Esop Akpan, described the allegations as “baseless anonymous leaks” intended to justify what he called the unlawful detention of his client.
According to the counsel, the claims circulating in the media rely on unnamed sources and lack verifiable evidence. He argued that the reports form part of a coordinated smear campaign designed to discredit the former governor and create public justification for his continued detention.
Akpan said El-Rufai has been held since the night of 18 February 2026 after operatives allegedly acting under the direction of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) took him into custody from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The lawyer explained that El-Rufai had voluntarily reported to the EFCC on 16 February and was granted administrative bail before being transferred to ICPC custody.
He argued that the detention, which he said has lasted more than 20 days without formal charges, violates Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution requiring suspects to be arraigned within a reasonable time.
Akpan also questioned the validity of a 14-day remand order reportedly issued by a magistrate court on 19 February, stating that the court lacked jurisdiction and that the order expired on 4 March without being served on the former governor or his legal team.
The counsel said El-Rufai has repeatedly challenged the ICPC to charge him in court if evidence exists.
He added that the legal team has initiated criminal complaint proceedings against the ICPC chairman and other officials involved.
Malam Nasir @elrufai will be speaking at the 11th Annual Cambridge Africa Together Conference (ATC), holding today in St. John’s College, University of Cambridge.
