Sustainability Science Days 2022 #SSD2022 exploring different pathways in #SustainabilityTransitions today and tomorrow 🌱
CEM's @MakelaMarileena and @TOnkila & colleagues are also organizing two sessions about #SustainabilityAgency.
Below some highlights from the conference!
Feeling worn out with the huge global crises? Join us to hear about the solutions! Sustainability Science Days 2022 is a 2-day summit jointly organised by @AaltoUniversity and @helsinkiuni.
The programme for #SSD2022 is now available, register for free! https://t.co/NIoPa9xbc5
The last session #19 had very thought-provoking presentations about AI-assisted marketing and virtual reality furthering #SustainabilityAgency, but the highlight of the session were the results about citizen skills from @angelinapistefi's #CircularCitizen project:
Other uptakes from session #15:
3) Eco-industrial dev. should find ways to combine efficiency and sufficiency strategies
4) Blockchain has multiple potential applications in circular food system (recycling, prevention, regeneration)
5) Politics can be transition showstoppers /2
Other uptakes from session #15:
1) Consumers can attribute very creative meanings to mundane technological solutions - something to consider when innovating technologies
2) Sufficiency thinking could be one solution in achieving an affluent society within ecological limits /1
In session #15, CEM's researcher Annukka Näyhä presented her ongoing project which aims to discover how #SustainabilityTransition can be facilitated by future-orientated collaborative business models and develop a transition framework based on these.
Session #15 had many insights to offer!
Participants were encouraged to share their thoughts on a draft concept of #SustainableSolutions on Jamboard, here are the results of their brainstorming:
The 2nd day of #SSD2022 started with a discussion about #IndigenousPeople and how their knowledge and way of thinking could bring about a more socially, ecologically, and culturally just #transitions.
The 1st day of #SSD2022 also challenged us to take a #multispecies perspective and include non-human animals in #SustainabilityTransitions research.
The recent rise of #biodiversity talk in public discussion echoes this mindset shift, let's not waste this window of opportunity!
Session #11 highlights continued:
3) A well-planned, just transition to #CircularEconomy in Global South is needed so that marginalized groups with limited #agency can avoid negative social rebound effects
Session #11 highlights:
1) Transformative intermediaries influence institutional change through cooperating among intermediary networks
2) Businesses can drive sustainability digitally with remote sensors, AI, big data, digital twins and blockchain
Session #9: Kjøde discussed how open, inter-organizational innovation could spark quicker industry-wide transitions in construction. It however seems like we are "overwhelmed and under-equipped": our current design methods are unable to deliver on our sustainability ambitions.
In session #4, @olliSahimaa, Halme & Miller proposed using qualitative system mapping in organization & management research for better understanding of system dynamics. The visual map of cause-and-effect chains could help executives with long-term decision making.
I am very happy and proud to present a piece written together with Dr Marjo Siltaoja, fresh from the press on #EIST, on the adaptive and transformative capacities of peripheral farms, analysed against the backdrop of #justtransition. 1/

New research finds that the planetary boundary for "green water" - the water available to plants - has been transgressed as soil moisture changes. That's now six of nine boundaries blown. https://t.co/T9Nlz8PJGs
