HOW COMMUNION IN THE HAND CAME TO U.S. PARISHES:
"The practice took longer to reach implementation here in the United States, and the story of how it came about is not an edifying one. In 1975, the Archbishop of Cincinnati (later of Chicago), Joseph Bernardin, who was also at that time President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, tried in vain to generate the two-thirds vote of U.S. bishops required prior to requesting an indult. He tried again in 1976 and again failed to get the votes. At the 1977 conference, one brave bishop, knowing well that the practice of communion in the hand had little support among the American faithful, asked for a survey of dioceses on the question. Cardinal Bernardin immediately dismissed his request as “out of order.” Frustrated after three years of failed votes, Bernardin resorted to counting the votes of bishops not in attendance at the meeting, including several retired bishops who no longer presided over any diocese. It was in this seemingly underhanded way that the later Cardinal Bernardin was able to generate sufficient votes to apply for an indult.
"Just days after the indult was granted to American parishes – to all parishes, not just those in which communion in the hand was already in evidence – printing presses went into overdrive pumping out small pamphlets in support of communion in the hand. These were distributed during parish Masses and in RCIA classes. A quick survey of these pamphlets and their cartoonish stick-figure illustrations reveal that they are riddled with historical inaccuracies and theological assumptions that are not well supported."
Catholic Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of the Diocese of Quelimane in Mozambique, was shot and killed at his residence today. He was 54 years old.
