A tobacco salesman called George Hull was a big supporter of Charles Darwin's theories. He got into an argument with a reverend who claimed “giants once roamed the earth!” Hull was shouted down by the reverend and his congregation.

Annoyed, Hull set out to pull an epic prank — he built a giant, ten foot tall “petrified man”, designed to look like a bog body. Hull then hired some men to dig up a quarry, supposedly for business purposes. They then discovered the fake bog body he and a friend had buried overnight.

Hull designed the giant fake body to look like himself, but wanting to make it look realistic, he consulted a geologist. The geologist said hair wouldn’t be petrified in a bog, so Hull removed the hair and beard he had initially given his giant likeness. The circus owner and showman P.T. Barnum began exhibiting the giant, seeing money in it.

The Cardiff Giant was quickly revealed to be a hoax by scientists. But priests and theologists kept defending it as “real.” All the while, George Hull quietly laughed his butt off because his naked likeness was used by his ideological opponent to prove a point he was against. A pretty epic prank, if you ask me.
