@thisisfoster It’s easy to have tidy doctrine & empathy. It’s far more challenging to apply that doctrine to your life & others. Or as Paul said “imitate me as I imitate Christ.” More needs to be said on this matter, thanks for bringing it to light. May the Lord raise up men for His Church.

I had a conversation with an old acquaintance recently who believes that only evangelism really matters. After all, the world is not our home, so civil life is secondary. Building lasting things is not necessary, children are optional, having a legacy is suspect, etc. His view is that the dominion mandate has expired, and so the Great Commission is really our ultimate, only mandate.

He is married, but he and his wife do not want children. Instead, they fill their time with travelling and seeing the world. Why not? If the world is going to be destroyed anyway, and the Christian life is reduced to extracting souls from the world rather than discipling men to take up their duties within it? Why invest in households, institutions, and future generations?

This is a thinner Christianity than what the Scriptures portray. The point of being a citizen of heaven is not to despise earthly duties, but to be ambassadors of heaven here on earth. After all, it is still our Father’s world: “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1).

In Jeremiah 29, God did not tell exiles in Babylon to sit around waiting for escape. He told them to build houses, plant gardens, take wives, have sons and daughters, and seek the peace of the city. The Great Commission does not cancel the dominion mandate, but rather, it restores men to God so that they can order their lives toward Christ. A disembodied Christianity is not the goal. Christ saves men with bodies, spouses, children, homes, churches, grandchildren, etc. And then he restores their nature so that they can order all of these aspects of their lives for his glory.

The Gospel does not make the dirt we till unimportant, and no faithful servant buries his tools because the Master is coming back.

Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.”

Great insight! Unfortunately this idea permeates Christian churches and runs counter to biblical teaching on the sanctity of human life and the amazing truth that we are created in the image and likeness of God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Christianity does not teach that wanting good things is evil. Scripture says every good and perfect gift comes from God James 1:17. What it condemns is turning good gifts into ultimate things. When desire becomes worship, it destroys us, not because God is insecure, but because idols cannot give life Matthew 6:24.

As for hell, the Bible never presents it as God losing a feud with one of His creatures. That framing is simply wrong. Hell is not about God’s ego. It is about God’s holiness and justice. Sin is not a personality clash. It is rebellion against the Creator. The wages of sin is death Romans 6:23. God does not delight in judgment Ezekiel 18:23, but He does not deny justice either.

Suffering is not glorified for its own sake. It is explained. In a fallen world, suffering exposes our need and strips our illusions of self sufficiency. God does not stand distant from it. He entered it. The cross is not God demanding pain. It is God bearing it Himself Isaiah 53:4 to 6. If God were indifferent, there would be no incarnation and no cross.

Christianity does not say life is only suffering. It says suffering is not meaningless. And it does not say God enjoys judgment. It says He is patient, not wishing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance 2 Peter 3:9. The question Scripture presses is not why God judges, but why He saves at all.

The picture below is of me and my father representing Venezuela in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. He was born and raised there. I was born and raised in the States, but feel a strong kinship with my heritage. Here is what we think about what's going on in Venezuela:

A little background first. For years, he has spent hours each week following Venezuelan news and talking with his brothers and sisters who still live there. I have dozens of cousins still living there. He called me in tears when María Corina Machado won the Nobel Prize because of the hope he had that it would focus the international spotlight on his home country. He has spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours gathering donations and putting boxes of clothing, medicine, nonperishable food, and other essentials together and sending them with a trusted third-party courier to help the needy. Anything that goes through normal mail is stolen. We still have no clue how this guy gets the packages through, but they haven't had a single one lost or seized.

And when I say essentials, I mean essentials. My aunt recently told us that she hasn't even seen a single tampon or pad for sale in over 5 years. A bottle of Tylenol or Advil, if you're lucky enough to find it in stock, is a full month wages.

We were actually visiting my parents for the holidays, so when I woke up and saw the news I immediately asked him his thoughts. My Dad also hates Trump and is highly critical of almost everything he does. Here was his response.

"I really don't like Trump, but I think what he's done today is great. It's absolutely fantastic that that corrupt evil dictator is gone and he deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his days."

In fact, his biggest concern is that the US won't go far enough because there are several people still there who are just as bad or worse and if they seize power, this will have been for naught.

Remember, there was an election and they Maduro out. This is an illegitimate government that is not supported by a mandate from its population.

I texted him this afternoon and he said the messages he's received from family and friends have been a mixture of awe that this could be accomplished and restored hope for the future. They thought Maduro was untouchable.

The following note, which we did not write, but he shared in our family group chat, describes our feelings almost perfectly:

"It is striking how, now that the world 'cares' about Venezuela, so many feel so confident in offering their uninformed opinions. Including trusted media.

As a Venezuelan, I just ask you to remember this:

You cannot violate the sovereignty of a country where there is no rule of law.

You cannot strip the rights of a people who have none.

You cannot 'take advantage' of the resources that have not belonged to us for a very long time.

And above all, you cannot inflict more pain on a people who have already endured so much.

This is not an attack. This is the first real chance Venezuela has had to restore its freedom after nearly 30 years of repression, persecution, fear, corruption, famine, violence, forced exile, and endless human rights abuses...

And for those we have lost, today we can finally hope their fight was not in vain 🤍."

Composed of just six ministers and 36 laymen, the assembly met under the leadership of John Knox to establish the framework for a Reformed Kirk (church) rooted in biblical principles.

The Assembly’s stated purpose was, “to consult upon those things which are to forward God’s glory and the well-being of His Kirk.”
