i was talking to my 4yo daughter today about the midterms and how most people oppose building data centers, complain about the cost of living, and want to tax the rich

she looked at me and said "but daddy, if we build more data centers we can get to ASI and solve virtually every problem! and if we tax the rich, who's going to invest in building all the things we need? we can't make people richer by taxing investment and increasing government spending!"

so i told her "yes sweetie, but most people are lazy, love stealing from people who build, and have an IQ of 80"

she looked confused and asked "then why do we let them make these decisions?"

i said "well, sweetie, that's how it works in a democracy and why we have elections. everyone gets to vote, and their vote counts just as much as anyone else's"

she thought about it for a second and said "but daddy, that means the people who don't understand anything get to decide the future of the people who do?"

"yes sweetie, that's democracy"

she looked me dead in the eyes and said "then democracy is retarded and they shouldn't be allowed to vote" and went back to play

i was left speechless

i genuinely don't have a mental model for people who think like this

do they genuinely think that someone with $700k sitting in a bank account isn't rich? that a billionaire didn't work hard to build his wealth?

do they think that money just magically appears in a billionaire's account while he's sleeping?

apparently creating something that millions of people voluntarily pay for is exploitation, but confiscating the wealth they created is justice

i don't even think it's possible to change these people's minds, no matter how much evidence you bring them because this has nothing to do with economics and everything to do with envy

some people see someone more successful than themselves and wonder how they can achieve the same. others just want to see that person brought down

and i think very few things are more dangerous than people who have convinced themselves that their resentment is a virtue
