To call the journey of Pramod Mahajan Ji and Narendra Bhai Modi the “corporatisation of the Sangh” is to fundamentally misunderstand what the Sangh is.

Pramod Ji was associated with the Sangh from childhood. He grew into its values, worked with its newspaper, taught in an RSS-run school, and in 1974 chose to become a full-time pracharak. His relationship with the Sangh was never transactional. It was organic, deeply personal, and rooted in the idea of sewa.

His journey also tells us how the Sangh has always understood political work. Pramod Ji was given responsibility in Maharashtra when the BJP was still a young political force. In the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Bombay North East at a time when the BJP won only two seats across the country. Yet the importance of that election was never simply the result. For a swayamsevak, the task was to go to people, build relationships, strengthen organisation, and keep working even when the political circumstances were difficult. Pramod Ji went on to become one of the BJP’s finest organisational minds, but the foundation remained the same swayamsevak who had entered public life through the Sangh.

There is a beautiful anecdote from the difficult days when the Sangh was banned. Pramod Ji explained that the real strength of the Sangh was not merely its formal structure, offices, or institutions, but the countless relationships it had built with people across society. That is the essence of the Sangh. You can ban an organisation, but you cannot ban an idea that has found a place in the hearts and lives of people. You cannot ban relationships, sanskar, or sewa.

The Sangh has faced bans in 1948, 1975, and 1992. Yet it continued to endure, rebuild, and expand its work because it understood something fundamental: society changes, and an organisation committed to serving society must evolve with it. The Sangh has adapted to changing times without abandoning its core.

That is precisely what Rahul Gandhi misses when he calls the journey of Pramod Ji and Narendra Bhai the “corporatisation of the Sangh”.

The Sangh is not a corporation. It is held together by relationships, discipline, sanskar, and sewa. Its greatest strength is the ordinary swayamsevak who gives his time and energy to society without expecting anything in return.

Pramod Ji understood this. Narendra Bhai understands this. Both were swayamsevaks before they became political leaders. Both accepted different responsibilities as the needs of their times demanded. The responsibility changed, the swayamsevak did not.

The Sangh evolves with time, but its commitment to sewa and Maa Bharati remains unchanged. A swayamsevak does not ask what position he will receive, but what responsibility he must fulfil. That is why Pramod Ji and Narendra Bhai could move from the shakha to the highest offices of public life without ceasing to be swayamsevaks.
The form evolves, the soul remains.
