It's almost unbelievable that it has been 4 years since we excavated the entrances to the Kortestollen in Wijtschate. Although it was impossible to reach the gallery, it was still impressive to uncover the steps. Some were still in excellent condition.

My greatest movie watching experience ever was in a Polish forest on site of hut 104. Drinking beer with veterans of the escape as they grumbled light heartedly about the errors. Just behind screen was top of shaft to Harry, the escape tunnel, which we’d just rediscovered. Epic.
Top discovery!
It's amazing how a seemingly simple sketch is of inestimable value to our knowledge of such wooden constructions.
Great work by the colleagues and everyone who contributed. You can be justly proud.

Picture of last months excavation of 'White Trench' between Langemark and Poelkapelle. It was mostly build up above ground. The (shallow) outlines are very clear with 'White House' in the back. It was taken on the 16th of aug. 1917 by the 6 KSLI during the Battle of Langemarck.
@SimonVerdegem@Claudia_Sky_Q@DigHill80 My engagement with the Hill 80 project was and continues to be a highlight of my career. Being able to apply digital preservation to the work there has been satisfying personally and the data gathered continues to impact university students six years later.
Today, we were privileged to attend the reburial of 4 French soldiers at Saint-Charles de Potyze. Our teams were responsible for their recovery: a Tirailleur Sénégalais, a Chasseur and a French soldier, all unknown. And Sgt Valentin Menetre (2e B. Chasseur à Pied).
These paper fragments were found just next to a trench on Westhoek Ridge. Large portions of text were preserved, revealing it to be a newspaper. The preservation was so good that it could be determined it was 'The Australasian' from Saturday, August 4, 1917.

The omnipresence and tremendous power of artillery is a recurring theme in studying the artefacts. These finds were all affected by shrapnel or destroyed by the shockwaves.

We need #help identifying this object. It was found near the location where we discovered the spud of a Mark IV tank. Given the thickness of the steel, there is a possibility that it is also a part related to the tank. Can someone confirm and/or identify this?
After all these years excavating in the Salient, I've seen plenty well-preserved objects. However, the degree of preservation and especially the quantity of excellently preserved artefacts from this excavation continues to amaze me. This week, I've seen so many exceptional pieces
All German soldiers from @DigHill80 were reburied with military honours in 2019 at the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Langemark, along with others found in different locations in the Ypres Salient.

Extremely remarkable were two infantrymen from the Bavarian RIR nr. 17 who were killed together in their trench by artillery fire, as the analysis of their remains suggested. What's particularly noteworthy is that both of them had pocket watches that had stopped at the same time.
In total, 112 soldiers were recovered during the excavation, including 72 Germans, of which 59 were confirmed to have fallen in (November) 1914. Most of them were buried in mass graves or individual graves. Others left behind in the trench they were manning when they got killed.
