🌊 New State of the Cryosphere Report Released at #COP29🌊
The 2024 report highlights urgent changes in the Southern Ocean that have far-reaching implications for global ecosystems & climate:
🧊 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 has been increasing since the 1990s, with impacts reaching also waters within MPAs and threatening marine life and the delicate Antarctic ecosystems.
🌍 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗔𝗖𝗖): Meltwater from ice sheets entering the Southern Ocean is causing a decrease in ACC speed, which could disrupt not only this critical current but global ocean circulation as well.
🔥𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻: Even if net CO₂ emissions reach zero, circulation changes due to past warming mean that the Southern Ocean may continue to heat up, highlighting the need for urgent emissions reductions now.
🌊 At @COP29_AZ, the Southern Ocean’s climate impact takes the spotlight! Absorbing vast CO₂ to buffer global warming, it faces threats from warming, acidification, & ice loss.
SOOS unites scientists & policymakers to address key gaps & needs!

Urgent call to strengthen international collaborations in polar regions to adress the complex impacts of climate change ➡️https://t.co/PvdFthRi4u
It is becoming undeniable that only a sustained, globally coordinated response can overcome the limitations of the small-scale, short-term studies carried out by individual nations.
Yet, conflicting national agendas complicate this effort, with divergent priorities and objectives threatening to fracture our collective actions and policies.
Hence, "synergies from existing initiatives like SOOS (...) should be harnessed to ensure that individual activities align and contribute toward common goals."
The paper by @Polar_Research members #ClareGaffey, @NKrauzig, @bax_dr and @kevin_tougeron in @PLOSClimate underlines the wake-up call raised by the #SOOSSymposium2023_Statement!

Antarctica’s melting ice drives sea-level rise, threatening coastlines globally. And once again, we are in dire need of more sustained monitoring and observations as emphasised by the #SOOSSymposium2023_Statement.
