Did you know that many babies learn to communicate using simple sign language even prior to using conventional speech?

Baby sign language is not a formal language with syntax and a grammatical structure (like American Sign Language, for example), but allows babies to use a small set of simple gestures to express their basic needs.

Many parents begin modeling it, alongside spoken language, from birth - but it is in the 8-10 month range that babies are typically capable of using it themselves.

It has a fairly short window of utility, but many parents find that pairing signs and words allows them to understand their children better and earlier.

And it’s pretty cool to watch.
