Exercising harder may matter more than exercising more. A recent study published in European Heart Journal, based on data from nearly 500,000 UK Biobank participants, suggests that higher-intensity activity is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular events, atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory diseases, metabolic liver disease, respiratory diseases, chronic kidney disease, and dementia, as well as all-cause mortality, regardless of total exercise volume.
These findings suggest that, beyond simply doing more exercise, incorporating higher-intensity efforts may offer meaningful health benefits, provided they are carefully tailored to each individual.

For clinicians, this reinforces a key principle in recurrent miscarriage care: avoid adding empiric treatments without demonstrated benefit. Management should remain focused on appropriate evaluation, clear counselling, and evidence-based supportive care.

๐ก Recurrent miscarriage: hydroxychloroquine should not be routine
In a multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial, hydroxychloroquine started before conception and continued until 10 weeksโ gestation did not improve livebirth rates versus placebo.

๐ก New insights in gut microbiome and antimicrobial stewardship
This large Swedish population-based study of 14,979 adults demonstrates that oral antibiotic exposure is associated with long-lasting reductions in gut microbial diversity and altered species abundance in a general adult population, persisting up to 8 years after use while underscoring that specific classes drive most of these sustained changes and should factor into long-term prescribing decisions.
Swipe through to explore the key findings and their implications for antibiotic prescribing and gut health.

๐ก New insights in treatment-resistant depression. One day of treatment. That's all it took. In this phase 2b randomized trial (JAMA Psychiatry, 2026), a single session of inhaled mebufotenin (GH001) led to remission in 57.5% of patients with treatment-resistant depression by day 8, versus 0% with placebo. NNT = 2. Effect size = -2.0, a magnitude rarely seen in psychiatry.
Tolerability was reassuring, with no severe adverse events. And among patients in remission at day 8, 87% maintained it at 6 months with only infrequent retreatments.
For a population that has failed at least two antidepressants, these results are hard to ignore.
