Sports in Kansas 4A Defensive Player of the Year

Kian Payne, Aquinas, DL

Payne, a senior, definitely passes the eye test at 6’4” and 255-pounds. He was the Co-EKL DPOY this season along with Justyce Betts of Miege. Payne had 62 tackles, seven sacks, eight tackles for loss against some of the top lineman in the state this season. He helped lead his Aquinas team to the 4A state championship, their second in school history under HC Randy Dreiling. He has committed to North Dakota State at the FCS level. He was also an all-state pick from Sports in Kansas in 4A last season. Payne is also a rugby player and had 10 division I offers before choosing NDSU.

St. Thomas Aquinas (4A) knocks off defending state champion and powerhouse Bishop Miege, 14-7, to win the regional championship. Earliest exit from the playoff for Miege since 2011. Miege won this same game 19-7 a month ago. Aquinas led by a huge defensive performance on the night to limit Miege to their lowest point total in 15 years. @KeatonCoadSIK catches up with legendary HC Randy Dreiling, Kian Payne and Dillon Marshall. #sportsinkansas
