A quiet giant is gone. Bruce Tolar was a man of great physical stature; almost all of the rest of us looked positively short standing next to him. But his height was dwarfed by his heart. There are many stories that could be told today, like how he was the linchpin of keeping the Michael Barranco Award alive for years. But that involved cajoling and imploring his colleagues for action, while one thing stands above all the rest to me: the Katrina Cottages.
We had a CNU On the Park Bench just yesterday commemorating the past twenty years of impacts of the Mississippi Renewal Forum, and I was happy to tell about Bruce's work, having no idea that he had just a few hours left on earth.
The Katrina Cottages were the star of the show in the heady days after the Forum, and for a couple years it looked as if they would make an enduring impact, but as the years ground us down, more and more of us had to pull out in order to survive, leaving just one man standing: Bruce Tolar. He literally bet the farm by developing Cottage Square in Ocean Springs, completely out of his own pocket. And while the rest of us bemoaned, he carried on.
And he wasn't just doing a cottage development; he went on a mission of bringing in all of the first cottages built, including the ones that had gotten so much press in the early days, so Cottage Square is literally a history museum... but one where people live and work, as there are almost as many home businesses as there are residents.
And in the end, they really did make an impact. Had Bruce not carried on while it seemed like all hope was gone in the years after the Meltdown and the Great Recession, I wonder how much of the wonderful cottage work we learned about yesterday might not have happened at all, leaving the cottages as just a history lesson instead of places where so many people are living their lives today?
What a giant he was on so many counts! I hope the people of the region remember, and I hope we're all inspired by his example to really stand up for the things we believe in... until we can make them happen, like Bruce did. I miss him so much already!
