See as much as I complain about how Shane was written, I don’t think RR hates Shane. I think that she does not find his narrative as compelling as Ilya’s, because in her mind Shane has had the easier life and path and it’s odd to her that ppl find Shane so compelling

However, i believe Rachel ignored Shane’s feeling for homophobia in hockey not due to his neurodivergence (she didn’t even write him to be autistic) but as a plot device.

Why are we reducing Shane’s sacrifice to taking a pay cut? He was accused of cheating as an athlete and driven out of a team he built up and hoped to retire in. Acknowledging his sacrifice does not diminish Ilya’s sacrifice. Yall are weird.

Why are ppl pitting Hollanov against each other??? Their love IS the book. Rr has her own bias which I will not go into here, but Hollanov loves each other and will sacrifice everything for each other. They are end game and soulmates. If u don’t like them both why u even here?

@viaevis Ilya did sacrifice his home country and Boston legacy too. They have both suffered a lot due to the homophobia and they are both allowed to struggle with it. However, at the end of the day they will always choose each other. It is not a competition, it’s them against the world

I don’t think Shane feels bad about going to Ottawa or choosing Ilya. But just as Ilya’s depression is not cured by them being married and out, Shane’s issues should not be magically fixed either. He’s allowed to feel bad about his team turning on him and accusing him of cheating

@Bsum14bb They have both suffered immensely due to homophobia in hockey culture (Shane also would have dealt w racism realistically but rr didn’t rlly go into it). It’s them against the world and not them against each other, and they are both allowed to feel bad about their sacrifices.

Not sure if ppl are being purposefully obtuse but you can choose to do something bc it’s what you want and still feel conflicted about the outcome. Ilya certainly wasn’t 100% happy going to Ottawa for Shane and it’s perfectly understandable. For Shane somehow it’s different.
