the train uses some geometry nodes to place the cars on the rail and make them move correctly with the bogies and all

This is basically a shortest path on a sort of navigation mesh, you can control path diversity (number of path calculations), variance of edge cost (ie how chaotic it gets) and can avoid re-using edges where other paths go by
