@DanaGoldstein From what I can tell, they are still teaching three-cueing methods. I was curious if there's any study showing if/how harmful they are in combination with phonics. The line from our admin is: cueing works for some kids, phonics works for other kids, so we'll do both.

@DanaGoldstein I see my first grader guessing at words she can't immediately sound out, based on the first couple of letters, but not sure if that's normal or a bad habit picked up from Units of Study.

@DanaGoldstein Thanks for this reporting. Our school in Brooklyn has added a phonics program, but continues to use Units of Study as well. The principal says both have their merits. Do you have any sense of whether using both strategies is problematic?

@annehelen Spirit days were explained to me as one of the only tools the school has (that works) to encourage attendance right before a school break, when families sometimes opt out of showing up. (Not including families who are traveling and leave early.)

@BrianLehrer As @NYCComptroller said on your show, why not use the unspent $600M COVID money from last year? This federal money won't last forever, sure, but it was meant to help rebuild families' confidence in schools. Cutting budgets does the opposite and risks enrollment death cycle.

@BrianLehrer Public school parent here, whose school is losing $1M+ as my kid enters first grade. Seeing bigger classroom rosters for next year, less services for vulnerable students. $250M is not a full restoration, schools need nothing less than $469M as identified by @NYCComptroller.

@annehelen If you press Shift-Command-5, there's a screenshot app that opens and lets you change some options. (I prefer to have my screenshots save in the downloads folder, to keep my desktop clean.) But you can only turn that corner preview on/off, not change the time.
